In 2008, the Rwanda Coffee Development Authority (Ocir-Cafe) distributed four million coffee tree seedlings to growers in the country in order to boost production and try to meet its ambitious goal of creating $120 million in export receipts by 2011. The plan is to produce 35,000 to 40,000 tonnes of coffee.
Despite the tough global economy, the Development Authority is distributing another one million seedlings this year, the New Times of Rwand reports. The reason for the push is partially that current coffee yields in Rwanda have been dropping because coffee trees are aging into lower productivity.
Currently, the coffee sector in Rwanda is served by 148 cooperatives and 130 coffee washing stations. The country expects to earne about $60 million (Rwf32.8 billion) from about 28,000 tonnes of coffee this year. The Development Authority is also expected to build a roasting station this year in order to increase the quality of exports and also the margin it can expect from coffee sales.
