Nestor Osorio, Executive Director of the International Coffee Organization, i s concerned that coffee production this year is not going to meet demand – by about 480 million kilos or pretty close to one billion pounds. That led me to an interesting question. How much coffee do we actually drink globally?
It turns out that his projection is for a 1.6 percent rise in coffee consumption – primarily due to more coffee consumption in Asian and European markets – to 130 million 60-kilo bags. That works out to over 17 billion pounds per year. That, in turn, is close to 3 pounds per person to year. Which doesn’t sound like much until you consider that that includes all non-coffee drinkers, all babies, etc.
